Based on the UNHAS Strategic Plan 2021-2024, the long-term vision of UNHAS for 2030 is to become a center of excellence in the development of human resources, science, technology, arts, and culture based on the Indonesian Maritime Continent (IMC) with the strategic vision of “A Superior and Innovative University Based on the Indonesian Maritime Continent.”
In the IMC concept, all study programs have equal freedom and opportunities to contribute to the development of science, technology, arts, and culture. This is in line with the concept of the maritime continent, which signifies a natural unity between land, sea, and air. This entity is uniquely organized and displays characteristics of a continent with distinct features from the perspectives of climate and weather (climatology and meteorology), water conditions (oceanography), earth crust structure (geology), biodiversity, and social-cultural arrangements (anthropology). In addition to being a geographic unity, this arrangement also represents a geopolitical region under the jurisdiction of the Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI).
The strategic mission of UNHAS for the 2020-2024 period is as follows:
- Provide quality education to produce independent and globally competitive intellectuals. The educational activities focus on continuously improving the quality of teaching and learning processes, ensuring that graduates are independent and competitive. UNHAS must continue to produce graduates with competencies recognized by prospective employers, both government and corporate sectors. International standards will serve as a reference and direction for educational activities.
- Produce and promote leading research that benefits society. UNHAS must strive to innovate in research and community service so that the outcomes are original, innovative, high-quality, and beneficial. UNHAS must continue to demonstrate its existence as an educational institution that not only cares about the dynamics of its surrounding environment but also contributes to the improvement of social and economic welfare.
- Implement modern and digital-based university governance. To become a globally reputable university, governance plays a vital role in ensuring transparency, honesty, openness, accountability, and responsibility. UNHAS governance should prioritize professionalism, modernity, results-orientation, responsiveness, and digitalization. These principles must be integrated into the management practices and implementation of UNHAS’s tri-dharma (three main missions: education, research, and community service).
This vision is then translated into the Vision and Mission of the Faculty of Engineering, which is:
The strategic vision of the Faculty of Engineering UNHAS for the 2020-2024 period: “Global Competitive Higher Education in Engineering Based on the Indonesian Maritime Continent.”
Mission of the Faculty of Engineering for 2024:
- Provide quality education to produce independent and globally competitive intellectuals.
- Conduct leading research that benefits society.
- Implement effective, efficient, and digital-based governance in the Faculty of Engineering.
- Develop industry partnerships for mutual benefits.
Subsequently, the vision and mission of the Faculty of Engineering for 2020-2024 were internalized by the Department of Architecture through its vision: “To be the organizer of education, research, and community service in the field of tropical island architecture of the Archipelago, which is professional, superior, and leading in Southeast Asia,” with missions, including:
- Educate students to become architects who understand their profession and consistently commit to the development of Archipelago Tropical Architecture.
- Improve the quality of graduates who are ready to evolve into members of the intellectual community and achieve the highest possible degree of knowledge.
- Produce graduates with an independent spirit and potential.
- Enhance the quality of academic resources, including the number and quality of research, scientific publications, and community services.
- Improve the quantity and quality of laboratory facilities.
Based on the above vision and mission descriptions, the formulation of the Vision and Mission for the Professional Architecture Education Program is developed as a derivative of the vision and mission of Universitas Hasanuddin, Faculty of Engineering, and the Department of Architecture as follows:
1. Vision of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr)
The vision of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr) is to become a professional and globally competitive architecture education program based on the Indonesian Maritime Continent.
2. Mission of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr)
The mission of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr) is to implement architecture education with the spirit of the Indonesian Maritime Continent, based on Level 7 of the National Competency Standards (SKKNI), that surpasses the national standards of higher education (SNPT) and meets the 13 competencies of an architect.
3. Objectives of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr)
- Organize professional architecture education as an advanced education program to meet the five-year architecture education requirements as mandated by the Union Institute of Architects (UIA).
- Educate students in the Professional Architecture Education Program to master the 13 competencies of architects and UIA competencies.
- Provide professional architecture education that meets the market demands and the need for architecture services in Indonesia and ASEAN.
4. Targets of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr)
- Implement the PPAr curriculum effectively to produce graduates with the spirit of the Indonesian Maritime Continent and mastery of the 13 architect competencies, along with UIA competencies.
- Manage the program at Level 7 SKKNI that surpasses the SNPT.
- Execute the tri-dharma of higher education at Level 7 SKKNI with the spirit of the Indonesian Maritime Continent.
5. Strategy of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr)
The strategies of the PPAr include:
- Implement the education and teaching programs in architecture based on the project-based learning and case-based learning methods.
- Develop competencies and human resources through education and training in the field of architecture.
- Focus on tropical island architecture studies as the program’s distinctive feature.
6. Characteristics of the Study Program
The Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr) of UNHAS is based on the core scientific pattern outlined in the Vision and Mission of UNHAS, which is a center of excellence in the development of human resources, science, technology, arts, and culture based on the Indonesian Maritime Continent. This is reflected in the Vision and Mission of the Department of Architecture, which emphasizes Archipelago Tropical Architecture.
Tropical island architecture refers to architecture that is responsive and adaptive to the specific environmental challenges of tropical archipelago climates in Indonesia—characteristics that influence the design of architectural forms, spaces, and constructions that meet user comfort, structural strength, aesthetic value, and energy conservation requirements.
The Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr) at UNHAS aims to educate students as future architects who possess knowledge (cognition), skills (psychomotor), and professional commitment (affection) to continuously develop Archipelago Tropical Architecture.
The specialized academic content of the Professional Architecture Education Program (PPAr) includes the Indonesian Maritime Continent architecture, focusing on three central themes:
- The Indonesian Maritime Continent (IMC) Awareness
- Architecture in the Tropical Island Environment of the Archipelago
- Thematic excellence related to the needs of the community, such as disaster mitigation, energy conservation, alternative technologies, innovative materials, and sustainable settlements.
PPAr UNHAS will serve as a platform for professional development to enhance the competency of graduates to become professional architects. The aspects of professional development include:
- Developing the knowledge, skills, and competencies of professional architects, especially in the maritime continent field.
- Enhancing the architect’s mastery of new knowledge and skills in line with technological advancements.
- Increasing the architect’s responsibility to their profession as service providers to the community.
- Positioning Indonesian architects at a competency level recognized internationally.
Graduates’ expertise will be achieved through a structured educational process or work experience in specific fields of knowledge, leading to a program profile where graduates from the Professional Architecture Education Program at Universitas Hasanuddin are architects capable of serving in architectural practices such as:
- Preparing Initial Architecture Studies
- Designing Buildings and Their Environments
- Planning the Preservation of Buildings and Their Environments
- Designing Urban Design and Environments
- Preparing Technical Planning Documents
- Supervising Architectural Aspects
- Managing Building Project Work
